The Seiko 6105-8110 is one of the great tool watches of the 1970s, and its nickname says everything about how it is remembered. The 'Willard' takes its name from Captain Willard, the character at the centre of Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, and the association has followed the reference ever since. It is a diver built with unfussy purpose: a large cushion case, a crown placed at 4 o'clock and tucked beneath a guard, and a dial laid out for legibility at depth. The ghost bezel is the defining feature of this example. Years of exposure have faded the insert to a soft grey and blue hue, a patina that cannot be recreated and one that gives the watch a character no unworn bezel can match
The dial, hands and lume are all original, and the lume remains intact on both. On a 1974 tool watch, a complete and untouched dial and hand set is the detail serious collectors look for first, and the one that cannot be put right once it has been replaced
