Rolex GMT-Master History:
The Rolex GMT-Master was introduced in 1954 with reference 6542, and it had two groundbreaking innovations at the time. It was the first watch to feature a dual time zone complication along with the now iconic Rolex “cyclops” which is a term used for the magnifying bubble to better read the date. As mentioned the GMT-Master can track two time zones since the local hour hand and the GMT-hand move together around the dial. The second time zone is tracked by setting the rotating 24-hour bezel, so the correct hour within the second time zone is lined up with the hand.
Condition Report:
This watch has the iconic and classic "Pepsi" aluminium bezel which is sharp and vibrant. It is paired with a 78360 Oyster steel bracelet with full 12 links and 501B endlinks from 1994, there is very minor stretch in the bracelet. The hands are original with tritium and match the hour markers. The dial is original with "Swiss T < 25" still present under 6 o'clock. To note the watch also has open 6's and 9's on its date wheel, a small vintage detail many collectors search for. Speaking of the date, it does have the ability to quickset. There are only minor hairline scratches on the case and bracelet with no dings or dents. It has seen minor polishing during service by Rolex in 2016 but the case remains extremely sharp with bevelled edges. The crystal is clean and sees little dust or wear.
