Rolex Explorer I 39mm History:
The Rolex Explorer I in 39mm was short-lived, originally released in 2010; it was later discontinued in 2019. Initially at release it was met with resistance from enthusiasts and collectors as the brand departed from the original 36mm case size. Within the Ref. 214270, there are two dial iterations - the "MKI/Mark I" (2010-2016) and the "MKII/Mark II" (2016-2019). The MKII dial is a full redesign of the classic Explorer at this larger case size. The hour markers along with the 3, 6 and 9 Arabic numerals were now filled with luminous material - attending back to its original look and feel at 36mm. The Mercedes hands were also increased in size and length to properly proportion the aesthetic. This change was welcomed by the Rolex community as it paid due respect to the original 36mm Explorer I.
