Arguably our favourite Rolex model at Wynn & Thayne, this yellow gold Day-Date in 36mm Ref. 1803 is a beauty to behold. Recently serviced in 2022 it's ready for a new journey.

This specific iteration of the iconic Rolex Day-Date Ref. 1803 pairs high polish 18k yellow gold with an elegant 'Wide Boy' dial that relates to its thick baton hour markers and matching hands. The Day-Date model is iconic for the day of the week spelled out in full at 12 o'clock and the date via the window at 3 o'clock. As a 4-digit reference of the Day-Date it incorporates the much loved vintage features such as its plexiglass crystal, pie-pan dial and non-quickset movement. We have paired this watch with our own strap in partnership with Molequin with a polished gold buckle.

Report

Overall, the watch is in great condition and was last serviced in 2022 by an independent watchmaker. The 'Wide Boy' pie-pan dial is in excellent condition with minimal wear present, applied hour markers are present and its lume plops are even across the surface.

Positioned at 12 o'clock is the day window and at 3 o'clock is the date window, and just below the 6 o'clock marker, you'll find the tagline 'T Swiss T'.

The plexiglass crystal is clean with only minor dust marks and has excellent visibility. The fluted 18k yellow gold bezel shimmers in various light and is beautifully subdued in tone compared to modern gold counterparts.

The 36mm no holes case is in great condition, bearing only minor hairline scratches and minor wear on the back of the case near the lugs. Even after a minor polish, the case edges are original to its design. It's hallmarks are still present on the back of the case. The crown, located at 3 o'clock, can be wound smoothly and operates without any resistance. Powering the watch is the Caliber. 1556, an automatic movement with a 48-hour power reserve currently running at +1 seconds per day.

Finally, the watch's "290XXXX" serial number, indicates a production date of 1972.

Launched in 1956, the Rolex Day-Date made history as the inaugural waterproof self-winding chronometer wristwatch showcasing both the date and day of the week. Rolex presented this remarkable timepiece to Mr. Eisenhower, the 35th President of the United States. Even in the present day, it continues to be recognised as the epitome of luxury.
