Rolex Datejust Ref. 1601 'Japan No Lume' Dial 1970
Rolex Datejust Ref. 1601 'Japan No Lume' Dial 1970
The Rolex Datejust has been the backbone of Rolex's catalogue since 1945. This specific 1601 features a rare 'Japan No Lume' configuration from 1970. While seemingly minor, the hands and dial of this watch lack any tritium, commonly found in watches during this era. Japan had imposed a ban on the use of the compound. In response, Rolex took a different approach, either removing tritium from dials and hands to cater to the Japanese market or crafting unique examples like this one, void of tritium slots in the hands or dials. The outcome is a remarkably minimal design for the watch, making it an enticing collectable for enthusiasts. The watch itself has everything you want and need in an everyday watch: an easy-to-read date function, a fluted white gold bezel, a gorgeous Jubilee bracelet, and the iconic Caliber. 1570 automatic movement running under the caseback.
Condition Report:
Overall, the watch is in great vintage condition and ready for its new owner. The silver dial is in excellent condition, with minimal wear present. 'Door-Stop' hour markers are present at 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock; this relates to the larger than usual baton-style hour markers. The plexiglass crystal is in good condition, with minimal scratches and chipping. The 36mm case is in great condition, with only minor scratches and dings considering the age of the watch. There is minor evidence of polishing, and the case remains sharp. The 18k white gold bezel has aged a beautiful patina with hints of yellow and cream.
Located at 3 o'clock is the crown, which winds smoothly with no resistance. The watch is running exceptionally well at -7 seconds per day. The watch is paired with a 62510H flat-style Jubilee bracelet featuring '555B' endlinks. It is in good condition and exhibits a slight sag, which is expected considering its age. It can accommodate wrist sizes up to 7.75 inches with the number of links provided. Finally, the serial number 233XXXX points to a 1970 production date.
Personal Comments:
The Datejust is one of the easiest watches to wear; the ability to pair it with anything from a double-breasted suit to even sweatpants while making a grocery run concludes that it is the perfect companion for anyone. We personally believe a vintage Datejust is a must-have for any collector to own or for anyone looking for their first Rolex.
