In 1947, Thor Heyerdahl and five crew members set out on a journey from South America to Polynesia on a wooden raft called "KonTiki". They set out to prove the possibility of contact between the civilizations of the two regions in ancient times. Crew members of the KonTiki supposedly wore Eterna watches. A reasonable choice, as Eterna was one of the few brands that managed to get just about everything right, waterproof cases included.
This wonderful Eterna Kontiki dates to the 1960's and is in great vintage condition. This watch is a modest 35mm case excluding the original signed crown. The radial brushed dial is in great nick and is well preserved with silver tritium indices. To add to this the silver dauphine style hour, minute and seconds hands are original to the watch with tritium filled on the hour and minute hands. The iconic gold case back medallion depicts the KonTiki raft sailing and is in incredible condition for its age. The watch also comes on its original Gay Freres steel bracelet with the clasp stamped ‘4 61’.
